A rich and ambitious Primary curriculum, helping children grow in knowledge, confidence and character.
At Trinity Primary, our curriculum gives children strong foundations for each next step in their education.
From Reception onwards, pupils are supported to become confident readers, thoughtful writers, secure mathematicians and curious learners who ask questions, develop their ideas and take increasing responsibility for their learning.
Learning builds carefully over time so that children develop knowledge, vocabulary, skills and confidence as they move through Primary.
Learning for the journey ahead: our curriculum helps pupils build secure knowledge and strong learning habits while developing the confidence, character and independence they need for what comes next.
What learning looks like at Trinity Primary
Our curriculum follows the National Curriculum and is enriched by wider knowledge, experiences and values that help pupils live life in all its fullness.
We want pupils to know more, remember more and use what they have learned with increasing confidence. Children revisit important knowledge, practise key skills, develop vocabulary and make connections between what they have learned.
The Trinity Standard for Teaching and Learning
Teaching and learning at Trinity is shaped by seven key principles. Together, they help teachers plan learning carefully, support pupils effectively and provide appropriate challenge.
High expectations
We encourage pupils to approach learning positively, take pride in their work and understand that effort, behaviour and ambition matter.
Questioning
Questions help pupils think, explain their understanding, explore ideas and make connections in their learning.
Reviewing
Important learning is revisited so that pupils can strengthen their understanding and connect new knowledge with what they already know.
Feedback
Feedback supports pupils to understand their learning and consider how they can improve and develop their work.
Practice
Pupils have opportunities to practise important knowledge and skills, helping learning become increasingly secure and confident.
Modelling
Teachers demonstrate thinking, processes and successful approaches so that pupils can understand how to apply their learning.
Challenge
Pupils are encouraged to think deeply, persevere and develop the confidence to engage with learning that stretches their understanding.
Strong foundations, wider opportunities
Reading, writing, mathematics, phonics, vocabulary and communication are central to children’s success, but they sit within a much broader curriculum.
Pupils also learn through religious education, science, history, geography, art, design and technology, music, physical education, computing and wider experiences.
Across the curriculum, children are encouraged to discuss ideas, ask questions, develop resilience and become increasingly independent learners.
How learning develops through Primary
Children’s learning develops as they grow. Each stage builds on what has come before while preparing pupils for what comes next.
Reception, beginning the journey
In Reception, children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage framework. Learning combines adult led teaching, purposeful play, exploration and opportunities for children to follow their curiosity.
Children begin developing the reading, writing, mathematics, communication, relationships and independence that provide foundations for later learning.
Reception also helps children see themselves as capable learners, ready to ask questions, explore and try new things.
Years 1 and 2, building secure foundations
In Key Stage 1, children continue building the core knowledge and skills that help them access the wider curriculum.
Reading, phonics, writing and mathematics have a strong place in learning. Trinity uses Little Wandle Phonics to support early reading and phonemic awareness.
In mathematics, pupils follow White Rose, developing fluency, problem solving and reasoning alongside growing confidence with number and mathematical understanding.
Children also continue learning across the full range of wider curriculum subjects.
Years 3 and 4, growing knowledge and independence
In Lower Key Stage 2, pupils build on the foundations established earlier in Primary.
They become increasingly independent readers, writers and thinkers, with opportunities to discuss ideas, build subject vocabulary and deepen their knowledge across the curriculum.
Children are encouraged to make connections with previous learning and explain their thinking with increasing confidence.
Years 5 and 6, growing confidence for what comes next
In Upper Key Stage 2, pupils are supported to become increasingly confident, responsible and independent learners.
They continue developing mature reading, extended writing, mathematical confidence, subject knowledge and discussion skills while taking greater responsibility for their learning.
As pupils approach the end of Primary, these foundations help prepare them academically, socially and personally for the opportunities and expectations of Secondary school.
Reading at the heart of learning
Reading gives children access to learning across the curriculum.
From early phonics and stories in Reception and Key Stage 1, pupils develop increasing fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and confidence as readers.
As children progress through Primary, reading helps them explore ideas, encounter new knowledge and become increasingly independent learners.
Knowledge, character and confidence
Our curriculum is about more than individual subjects.
We want children to develop curiosity, resilience and independence alongside their academic knowledge. Pupils are encouraged to ask questions, explain ideas, listen to others, persevere when learning becomes difficult and take pride in their progress.
This reflects our wider ambition for pupils to grow academically, socially and personally throughout their Trinity journey.
Supporting every learner
Children do not all learn in exactly the same way or at the same pace.
Staff work to understand pupils as individuals, provide support where it is needed and challenge pupils as they become ready to go further.
Where a pupil may need additional support, school and home work together so that the child can participate in learning and continue to make progress.
